Who are the 'Woodland Pioneers'

Bill Hogarth was a coppice merchant, working the woods in South Cumbria for the majority of his life. The aims of BHMAT are to promote coppicing through the setting up of an apprenticeship scheme. We now have 5 apprentices and we are looking for two more for 2006.

We run an industry-led, broad based apprenticeship training that is recognised as the first of its kind in the UK. The training is for 3 years and is validated by the Open College North West

Priority will be given to people who show a genuine interest in pursuing coppicing as a career. There will be 4 one day introductory woodcraft workshops with the final day consisting of workshop sessions. A certificate of attainment will be available to those who want it (£15). The first 4 days will cover the following:

Gate Hurdles by Owen Jones

Owen Jones is best known as the countries only full time oak swill basket maker. In this workshop Owen offers you the chance to have a go at cleaving and shaping wood to make a small gate hurdle.
Charcoal in barrels by
Brian and Louise Crawley

Lead by local coppice workers Brian and Louise Crawley of Woodland Ways, this day will initiate you into the mysteries of charcoal burning. Using an oil drum, which is a great way to get start making your own barbeque charcoal at home.
Wooden Bowls by Maurice Pyle

Starting with a green unseasoned log you will work through a variety of stages firstly with the splitting of a short section of hardwood, then, using axe and gouges to shape a bowl of your own design. Variations include dough troughs, wooden scoops, plates and bowls with handles. Your finished bowl will be quite sculptural and probably unique, and definitely very satisfying to create.
Rustic Oak Stools by Ian Taylor

Ian Taylor has a thriving coppice business; Lakeland Coppice Products. He is sponsor to two of our BHMAT apprentices. He specializes in riven oak products and will expertly guide you through the process of making a rustic oak stool to take home.
Carving Workshop by Geoff Whitley

For our apprentices and one or two extras there will be a four day carving workshop going on at the same time to the Woodland Pioneer Programme. This will give you the chance to catch up with the BHMAT apprentices and to get first hand information about what it is like to be an apprentice.

Friday Workshops

Friday will be an open day with numerous woodcraft workshops including:

Woodcarving, Willow work, Tent pegs, Tool sharpening etc. Plus a chance to hear more about the apprenticeship and to register your interest in it. If you are only able to make one day this would be it, but do register if you want to participate in the workshops.
